Bio
SKY FARRELL
Sky Farrell is an artist who has taken on the cause that in this age of digital images, online magazines and the internet, print is anything but dead. Her instantly recognizable collage style is rapidly carving her out a niche that pays homage to some of the greatest images, print magazines and advertisements of our time. Farrell gallantly shuns the use of digital scans and photoshop that can often distort and disconnect the image from the pop-culture moment it was created in. Instead, she tackles mountains of original tear sheets and primitive color photocopies, to edit them with her expert eye into collages that explore themes across pop-culture—a colorful explosion of all the images and themes conjuredup in our memory from the iconic faces of punk alongside the early fashions of Vivienne Westwood, to the the first snapshots of Run DMC and streetwear fashion spreads of the 80s.
In 2009, Farrell met and collaborated with famous fashion photographer Leslie Kee. He commissioned her on a series of collages of his photography for Opening Ceremony in Tokyo, work that were later published as a 16 page spread in Re-Quest QJ, on of Japan’s top fashion magazines. A great start for a young artist, this was to be only the beginning of an amazing roller coaster ride of attention and accolades from some of the most creative magazines in the world. February 2010, Farrell was commissioned by Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine to create a show-stopping entrance hall and expansive warehouse wall covered with the pages of the magazine in celebration of their 40th Anniversary. Embraced by the fashion and art community, Farrell was snapped up by further large-scale commissions for V Man, and most recently music magazine SPIN, for their 25th anniversary concert series event, to bring to life the impact, imprint and influence the pages of their magazines have had on pop-culture over the years.
While enjoying the thrill and fast pace of the fashionable life, Farrell’s main focus is creating her own art on her own time. Dividing her time between Miami and New York, she also pursues her passion for photography which she showcases on her popular blog www.ViciousSkylicious.com.
Farrell is also the author of “Stay High 149”, a book on famed New York Graffiti artist, Stay High 149, published in 2010 by Ginko Press.
